Sometimes…Revenge Is A Bitch – The Long-Awaited Finale “Adjusting Journal Entries” Is Available Now!

The many facets of revenge are explored in this series. In the first novel, Accountable to None, the heroine experienced numerous life-altering events that set her on a course for revenge. The term revenge is a dish best served cold has never been more accurate. The flawed protagonist waited five years to wield her sword of vengeance and her rewards were sweet and fulfilling.

In the sequel, Zero Balance, the aftereffects of obtaining revenge are explored. Oftentimes while one is plotting and planning the downfall of others by making them accountable for their actions, they can suffer tunnel vision. They don’t stop to consider how their actions, even if morally justified, will touch others. The quote by John Milton from Paradise Lost is in the beginning of Zero Balance and speaks this truth:  “Revenge, at first though sweet, Bitter ere long back on it self recoiles;”

The third and final book, Adjusting Journal Entries, touches upon the depth of madness that anger and pain can drive someone to. How much emotional pain and heartache can one human being endure before their sanity breaks and they become a killer?

Revenge is a normal human response to physical and mental pain. I would imagine that most of you reading this have, at one time or another, experienced a moment where you wanted to make someone pay for the pain they caused you. The players in this series do just that–they live out that dark fantasy. Unfortunately, the repercussions are tremendous.

I invite you to explore the world of revenge in this series.

Synopsis:

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. But when it comes to human emotions, the reaction is never equal. No one understands this lesson better than the partners at the prestigious accounting firm of Winscott & Associates.

Greed, power, money and sex left six people dead and four in the hospital…

Audra Tanner never realized how far and deep the ripple she created in her revenge pool would extend. Now as the dust settles on the explosion that rocked not only her life, but the lives of countless others, Audra must fight to gain control over her life.

Because others are out to end it.

What People Are Saying About Adjusting Journal Entries

“I just finished reading Ashley Fontainne’s Adjusting Journal Entries and was I pleasantly surprised! I am not sure what genre to place it in: Legal thriller? Psychological thriller? Mind blowing ass kicking thriller? They all apply. Five stars is an understatement. Damn good reading!”

– Zach Fortier, bestselling author –

Ms. Fontainne is an excellent writer and excels at creating tenuous plots with sudden new sub-plots that take the reader by surprise. For those readers who enjoy mysteries, intrigue, thrills and danger, I heartily recommend this story.

– Joan Adamak, Amazon reviewer –

Oh what a tangled web Ashley Fontainne weaves! The attention to detail throughout the series is astounding, leading up to an intense and insane conclusion. Nothing happens by chance or coincidence…everything that happens is tied together with a great big action-packed bow…Fontainne is an undeniable talent and is…a force to be reckoned with in the publishing world.

– Charlotte Foreman, reviewer for BestChickLit.com –

Nothing short of mind blowing. Nothing is predictable – that is what makes this series awesome. The story twists and leaves you shocked and on tenterhooks… Ashley Fontainne has created three dimensional characters, some you love, others you really love to hate. They have an impact on you, and even after you turn the last page and you know your time with them has come to an end, they live on inside you.

– author Lindsay Anne Kendal  –

Fontainne…has a brilliant way of bringing to life the twisted psyches of her antagonists and she does it again in Adjusting Journal Entries. Fontainne has the unique ability to juggle several themes throughout her books as she artfully weaves them together, like a beautifully wrapped present…this last book will not disappoint.

– author Joanna Lee Doster –

About Ashley Fontainne:

International bestselling author Ashley Fontainne is an avid reader of mostly the classics. Ashley became a fan of the written word in her youth, starting with the Nancy Drew mystery series. Stories that immerse the reader deep into the human psyche and the monsters that lurk within us are her favorite reads.

Her muse for penning this series was The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas. The revenge on all those who hurt and betrayed Edmond Dantes and the incredible rollercoaster ride his journey takes you on intrigued her. Ashley’s love for this book is what sparked her desire to write her debut novel, Accountable to None, the first book in the trilogy Eviscerating the Snake. With a modern setting to the tale, Ashley delves into the lengths a person is willing to go when they seek personal justice for heinous acts perpetrated upon them. The second novel in the series, Zero Balance, focuses on the cost and reciprocal cycle that obtaining revenge has on the seeker. For once the cycle starts, where does it end? How far will the tendrils of revenge expand? Adjusting Journal Entries, the third in the series, answers that question: far and wide.

Born and raised in California, Ashley now calls Arkansas home with her husband and four children. She also enjoys writing poetry and short stories and recently published Ramblings of a Mad Southern Woman: A Collection of Short Stories and Poetry on Life, Love, Loss and Longing, which is available on Amazon. Ashley is also a supporter of the Joyful Heart Foundation that assists victims of violent crime seeking help and healing, and donates 10% of all yearly book sales to the cause.

Guest Blogger: Author Tony Hubbard And His Debut Novel “A Demon Lies Within” And How It (Finally) Came To Fruition

Today we are excited to have guest blogger Tony Hubbard with us! Read on to learn about his debut novel “A Demon Lies Within” and his writing journey. This amazing novel will be available November 13, 2012!

Available November 13, 2012

It began with a question, then a dream.

After years of occupying only random pieces of scrap paper, various notebook pages and an extremely rough, rough draft, a question and a dream were the two elements needed to make A Demon Lies Within a reality. This was a journey 18 years in the making.

18 years.

Turns out the inspiration I was searching for during each passing year was in the form of a simple question: “What are you going to do now?”

After getting a master’s degree from Northeastern University in August, 2009 several people asked, “What are you going to do with all your free time now that you’ve finished your master’s program?”

I hadn’t given much thought to my future endeavors, never mind writing of any kind, at that point, but the combination of that question along with an image I saw (or thought I saw) on my graduation day morphed into a dream that ended with me writing a novel and appearing on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show. I was a guest because she was recommending my book for her book club. In the dream I went all Tom Cruise on her, the sheer excitement of her recommending my book was such that I jumped around on her couch as if I was on a trampoline.

Buoyed by this crazy dream, I was off and running (for a third time). I spent the fall of 2009 researching potential plot avenues and in February, 2010, I started the first draft of the novel that would ultimately become a finished product.

It took a lot to reach this point, as the seeds for this novel were planted long ago.

If Chinese Democracy was Axl Rose’s albatross then A Demon Lies Within is mine.

For as long as it took Chinese Democracy to be completed – 14 years, until release in 2008, A Demon Lies Within took longer to produce and soon will be unleashed upon the world with its November 13 release.

The newborns who were just days old in April, 1994 as I began my first-ever attempt at this novel, are now seen as adults in the eyes of the law, several months into their college careers, as my debut novel finally hits bookstore shelves.

It was during my junior year at Northeastern University, while working the overnight shift as a co-op reporter in the Sports Department of The Patriot Ledger newspaper, I came up with the idea to write a novel about a family who moved from Boston to Vermont. In doing so, their eight-year-old son Joshua, would become possessed by the spirit of a young man stoned to death in the front yard of their new house. The demon spirit possessed Joshua and terrorized the town as time closed in on the hundred year anniversary of his death.

The husband was a newspaper reporter, very original of me to have the profession of one of the main characters be the same as what I was studying while the wife worked for an advertising agency – again not that much of a stretch as advertising was part of the same College of Arts and Sciences that offered Journalism.

With inexperience in writing novels I tried to supplement the story using song lyrics of Led Zeppelin, Sting, Billy Joel, Joe Satriani, and Pink Floyd to movie the story along. I had the ingenious idea to creative a book soundtrack, though we now have book trailers that are all the rage, so I wasn’t too far off.

I still have the marked up version of the original book. I still have all of my handwritten notes and scrap pieces of paper with the various scene ideas. After a possessed Joshua spit in his mother’s face, Joshua’s father threw his son to the ground and punched him in the face. I had one of my English professor’s give the first draft of the story a read. My professor’s comment was that the scene was too violent. I wonder what he would say if he read the current version of the book.

The original story was 141 pages written in 5 months. A first draft was the entire result. The story and the desire to work on it faded away.

It stayed away until 2000 when the story evolved through different twists and turns. Instead of John being a newspaper reporter who wanted to move to Maine to get his family away from the hectic life they were living in Boston, in 2000, John became a high-powered stock broker making his clients millions and millions of dollars per day in the stock market with the explosion of website development, information technology and pharmaceutical companies.

Life in Boston becomes too much for John so he tells his girlfriend of two years, Miranda, that he wants to move to Maine and write a novel. She thinks it’s ridiculous so they break up and he moves to Maine anyways where he falls in love with his real estate agent, Sandi Cartwright, who has a nine-year-old son named Joshua. In this version of Joshua being possessed I wanted to introduce the element of witchcraft, specifically from the middle ages and demons into Joshua’s possession.

For that version of the book, I never typed anything. I have a bunch of handwritten pages with a couple of scenes semi-completed and the rough outlines of several chapters and that’s all. Once the basic concept was pieced together, I walked away from the book.

Over the next 8 years, every few months or so, I would have an idea for a new scene or some dialogue between John and Sandi but nothing extensive enough to start stringing the random thoughts together into a story.

That is until one day the perfect question came along and changed my life.

So if the horror fiction/suspense/thriller genre interests you, why not give A Demon Lies Within a read!

What People Are Saying About Accountable To None

…I truly enjoyed it and recommend it to all who enjoy a fast, intriguing and entertaining story with a little mystery thrown in for good measure.” – Midwest Book Reviews Senior Reviewer and author Joan A. Adamak

…you are grabbed hook, line and sinker into the story as the book becomes an almost compulsive read.” – Charlotte Foreman, reviewer for BestChickLit.com

“… this is now one of my favorite books of all time… even after you finish, it doesn’t let go. It stays with you.” – author Lindsay Anne Kendal

…I’m exhausted. I could not put this book down. It gripped me from the very beginning and the intensity level just kept building and building…an AMAZING READ!” – author Sandy L. Wolters

Thank you for joining us today, Ashley! We’re excited to have you here with us. Let’s talk about you and the re-release of your novel Accountable to None.

Tell us about yourself and some interesting tidbits about your life.

At the age of 42, I decided to return to college. My goal was to obtain a degree in science to fulfill my dream of becoming a registered nurse. I tackled the hard classes first then realized I needed a few elective courses to finish out my degree. I can only draw stick people, on a good day, so art was scratched off the list. Music and theater were crossed off as well, since my taste in music is not the same as my taste for classical literature. And theater? Forget it. So, creative writing won out.

Expressing my emotions on paper is something I’ve been doing since early childhood, but it was a personal release, not anything I imagined I would ever share with anyone other than close friends and family members. That all changed after Creative Writing I & II—thanks to an incredible instructor by the name of Melody Berning.

Accountable to None was my semester project for Creative Writing II. When I turned it in to Ms. Berning in March of 2011, she encouraged me to publish it, and in April of 2011, I uploaded the electronic version on Amazon just to see if she was right: people would enjoy my writing. After a few hiccups and pitfalls, Accountable to None hit number 1 in suspense in December of 2011 in the Kindle store.

Nursing went right out the window at that point, and although I did graduate with a degree in science, a new and previously hidden passion emerged: writing.

Accountable To None has a brand new look. What made you decide to update this already bestselling novel and who designed it for you?

The publishing world was, and still is at times, completely foreign to me. I sort of stumbled in, blind to all the subtle nuances and intricacies that it entails. Branding, tagging, click this, click that and all the sites to promote your work and how to promote it overwhelmed me (and still does at times). This is the bane of being an Indie writer because everything falls upon your shoulders.

I liken the change to trading in an older Corvette for a newer model.  The design is sleeker, the paint shinier and the new car smell stronger but underneath it all, the same vibrant engine still roars. Although I loved the previous cover design, once I was introduced to the fabulous team at Blue Harvest Creative, I knew it was time for some new exterior ‘paint’ and a luxurious interior.

Who is your favorite character in Accountable To None and why?

Although she is a minor character in the story, it is Mrs. Milligan. She is an elderly woman Audra meets during the course of the story and is drawn to her kind heart and gentle soul. Mrs. Milligan has suffered tremendous heartache and pain for over three decades that no parent should ever have to endure. She learned to let go, forgive and accept the tragedies in her life with grace and dignity, and attempts to pass her hard earned life lessons on to Audra.

Where did you get the inspiration to write Accountable To None?

My muse for penning this series was The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. The revenge on all those who hurt and betrayed Edmond Dantes and the incredible rollercoaster ride his journey takes you on intrigued me. My love for this book is what sparked my desire to write Accountable to None. With a modern setting to the tale, I wanted to delve into just what lengths a person is willing to go to as they attempt to seek justice on their own for heinous acts perpetrated upon them. The second novel in the series, Zero Balance focuses on the cost and reciprocal cycle that obtaining revenge has on the seeker. For once the cycle starts, where does it end? How far will the tendrils of revenge expand? Adjusting Journal Entries answers that question: far and wide.

Is there a favorite scene in Accountable To None that you’d like to share?

Yes, this scene took me quite a while to write because I couldn’t see through the tears. It was very emotional for me.

As they walked about midway through the field, Mrs. Milligan stopped by the large dogwood tree that stood proudly alone, its twisted branches seemingly reaching out to them. Mrs. Milligan closed her eyes and whispered something to the sky, too faint for Audra to make out, then kissed the top of the urn, handing it to Audra.

“Had it not been for you, my baby girl’s killer would never have been brought to justice. For that, we both will eternally be grateful to you. My daughter has been gone for over 30 years, but you, my dear, still remain a part of this world. My prayer for you is that as you scatter her ashes here in this place of rest, that you release your anger and pain along with them into the wind and begin your life anew, free of the sorrow that has ensnared your soul. Gina’s killer had the power over her life and he snatched it from her; don’t give him the same power over yours.”

Accountable To None is the first book in your trilogy. What can we expect in the second book Zero Balance?

Zero Balance begins nine months after the first book. One major change is that I switched from third person to first person in the narration, but also added each character narrating in first person. The book is fast paced and full of twists and turns, and I wanted the reader to feel like they were inside the mind of each character.

Audra is working on rebuilding her life and learning to cope with her numerous issues held over from Accountable to None. Unfortunately, she soon finds out that revenge is a cycle that never ends, and each round becomes deadlier than the first.

When will the final book Adjusting Journal Entries be available and what will that story tell us?

The book is finished and in the hands of my incredible editor. We are shooting for a release in October 2012. Audra finds out, as well as other characters in the story, that when you unleash anger and rage toward others, you will reap the same in return.

Your titles are all unique and interesting. How did you come up with them for the series?

Thank you for the compliment! There are numerous novels that use the backdrop of a law firm for the corporate setting and lawyers are often portrayed as greedy snakes. I wanted this series to be different, so I opted to set the action in an accounting firm. What better backdrop to showcase the greed and love for money better than an organization that’s sole purpose is to find ways to make more?

When I finished the opening prologue in the last sentence reads:  “She wasn’t quite sure yet how she would do it, but she would change every single one of them from being accountable to none to accountable to all.”

And I knew that would be my title because the majority of the central characters in the series felt like they were above the law and free to continue in their debauchery.

Several times in the story, Audra refers to her rapist, as well as the other partners, as snakes. And since she has spent the previous five years gathering information to take them all down and hold them accountable for their actions, the series title was born.

When you write does the idea or do the characters come first?

It depends upon what I am working on. For this series, the character of Audra came first, and the rest of the story and the characters fell into place around her.  One novel I am working on right now focusing on the idea of learning to lean on God during times of great turmoil, and is told through the eyes of a woman that decides to end her life.

Do you have a writing routine?

My long commute to and from work each day allows me to work out the scenes in my head, editing and re-writing mentally until the scene is set. Then, when I have time such as at lunch or late in the evening, I sit in front of the computer and let my fingers fly, literally closing my eyes as I recall my thoughts from earlier.

Are there certain elements or themes you like to address in your writing?

If you only read the first novel in the series, then you might walk away with the impression that the book was solely about one woman’s quest for personal justice. However, if you read the entire trilogy, my hope is that readers discover that I am not advocating vigilantism. Quite the contrary.  I hope that after reading this series, people will contemplate the devastating consequences that exacting revenge on someone that has hurt them might have, especially on innocent bystanders. Let’s face it—we all have had those moments of intense physical or mental pain that urged us to strike back, to inflict pain upon another as payback. When the blinders of anger cause you to focus on nothing but revenge, you fail to see the other options available, nor the potential pain that your own actions might end up causing others.

What has been the most satisfying accomplishment of being an author?

That was the day I received a private message on Goodreads from a reader that just finished Accountable to None. She wanted to let me know that after reading the book, she was going to finally seek therapy for the buried trauma she suffered over ten years prior when she became a victim of rape. She told me that she knew she needed to let go of the pain and anger and face her demons, and thanked me for opening her eyes to that. I remember staring at the computer screen, mouth agape and heart pounding as tears streamed down my face.

That moment in my life made every difficult turn and bump in the road worth it. To know that my words helped another person is something I will cherish forever.

How did you decide on this genre and do you write in any others?

I love reading a book that makes your heart beat faster as your palms sweat and your throat goes dry. I also enjoy reading a book that allows you to place yourself in the situation and really ponder: what would I do if faced with the same situation?

Suspense/thrillers are my favorite, but I don’t want to pigeonhole myself into just one genre. So, earlier this year, I released my poetry and short story book, Ramblings of A Mad Southern Woman, that touches upon many things, including my faith.

I am currently working on two novels at the moment (yes, I’m a glutton for punishment) one which is a historical type saga about a World War II veteran that will be heavily based upon my grandfather, and the other will be a tear jerker. After those two are complete, I’m switching to humor…I need a laugh break!

What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

My husband and I love to be out on our boat, so most weekends during the humid summer you will find us lounging at the ‘Redneck Riviera’ sandbar, also known as Lake Catherine. I love plants and have a lovely flower garden that I enjoy puttering around in. Our children are grown and on their own now, so my husband and I treat our dogs and cats like kids. My husband has been trying to teach me how to waterski, but it is a losing battle.

Thank you so much for having me on your blog. I had a lot of fun and I hope everyone enjoys the free eBook and enters the contest.

Thank you for being with us today, Ashley! It was truly a pleasure to have you and we wish you the greatest success!

Be sure to check out Accountable to None and make sure to stop by and say hello to the lovely and talented Ashley Fontainne.
