The Lie – Ashley Fontainne

What they say:

‘Karmen Moncrille’s name has been known throughout the world since the age of sixteen when her first book shot to the top of the bestseller’s list. Now everything she writes is an instant hit, and her legions of devoted fans eagerly await her next release. The mysterious Karmen always blamed debilitating panic attacks as the reason she avoided publicity and has become a recluse. Which is exactly what she wants the world to think. Only Karmen knows the truth behind her introverted nature. Terrified of being asked where her ideas come from, she fears being branded a raving lunatic. Now just a week before her twenty-third birthday, Karmen s world implodes. The madness that haunts her dreams spills over to her reality and she questions her sanity. Suddenly everything has changed and now the world will transform with her. Her last book will unleash the truth and alter mankind forever. Is Karmen’s ability to write a gift or a curse? She’s about to find out if her entire life is a lie. And why she was destined to write it.’

***Interview with Ashley Fontainne***

Of all of the characters you have created for your books, which is your favorite and why?

Great question yet oh-so difficult to answer. I have enjoyed writing all of them! A piece of me is embedded inside each one so I have a special tie to them all. If I must pick just one, it’s Karmen Moncrille, the main character for my latest novel, The Lie. Like me, she is a writer and has a sharp tongue and wicked sense of humor.

Is The Lie a standalone novel or will there be a sequel?

It is a standalone novel. Considering the subject matter, there is potential for the story to carry on, albeit in a different direction. However, I have yet to make that decision. I need to finish the other two projects I have on my plate first.

Your all-time favorite novel is “The Count of Monte Cristo” and has inspired you with the Eviscerating the Snake trilogy. What, if anything inspired you on The Lie?

The Lie happened in a very interesting way. The concept actually came to me one Saturday while I was drying my hair (maybe too much blood rushed to my head?). I was grappling with some of the more difficult aspects of being an author that week. Writing is the easy part. All the things that fall into your lap after the book is written are enough to drive one insane. That particular day, I contemplated my decision to write. Was it really all worth the craziness? Would it drive me to the verge of insanity? I couldn’t shut off the flow of ideas in my head that pushed to emerge onto paper, so what was I supposed to do? Take a vacation from my brain?

Then, the thought hit me: what if the words inside a writer’s mind were not thoughts of their own? What if they were implanted there by dark forces? Within twenty minutes (enough time to finish drying my curly mop) The Lie was born.

Your main character in The Lie gets the ideas for her novels in a very unique way, but how do the ideas for your novels come to you?

Inspiration for a story pops up in a variety of ways (see my crazy answer to #3!). I waited my entire life to find my niche, my calling, and I believe writing fits that desire. Forty plus years of thoughts are rambling around in my head just waiting to emerge, so when one leaks out, I run with it.

Over the years you have given many interviews and given advice to new and aspiring authors. What piece of advice have you found to be especially helpful throughout your career?

The stock, standard answer would be “have your work professionally edited, designed, formatted, etc.” Without a doubt, that is one of the most important advice out there. That, however, is not my answer today. A friend of mine, who is also a writer (i.e. crazy person) once told me to never give up my dream. No one has ever written the perfect book. They can’t. They are human. We make mistakes. We fall, scrape our knees, watch our blood stain the street, but we get back up and try again. Hopefully with more tenacity and determination to learn from our mistakes and master our chosen path.

Is the thriller/suspense genre your favorite read? Is that why you have chosen to write primarily thrillers?

Definitely. Whether I am reading a book or watching a movie, I want my jaw clamped, my knuckles white and my heart racing. I want to be so immersed in the story that when a plot twist pops up, I jump.

I love horror novels and movies as well yet I don’t believe I have it in me to write a horror novel. Who knows? Anything is possible.

You own RMSW Press. Tell us a little about that and what projects that aren’t yours are currently in the works.

Oswald and I, the memoirs of former Dallas Police officer Maurice N. “Nick” McDonald is scheduled to release on November 1, 2013. The book will be available on Amazon, Barnes&Noble and other outlets as well as in ebook format. I am pleased to announce that the novel will also be in hardback.

I am humbled that the family of Mr. McDonald entrusted me with this huge honor. It was quite the undertaking, since Mr. McDonald typed out over 300 pages and it sat in a three-ring binder since he wrote the last word in 2004. Hours of scanning, converting, editing, reference checking, etc., went into this project. I must thank the outstanding team at Blue Harvest Creative for helping me with this endeavor. To be part of making a death bed promise from a wife to her husband come true, and to see the beautiful smile on Mrs. McDonald’s face when I presented her with the final copy, is priceless. It is something I will never forget.

Recently, you won the Bronze Award for Number Seventy-Five in the Readers’ Favorite Book Awards for Best Thriller. What went through your head when you found out you won?

We were in Chicago for my niece’s wedding, so when I received notification that I won, my first thought was “wow, I’ve had too much to drink!”

I still can’t believe that my little 74 page novella placed in the top three over numerous other full length novels by talented authors. My husband made a shadow box with the award and the book, and each time I walk by it, I sort of shake my head. I don’t think it has set in completely. After all, I began this journey barely 2 ½ years ago.

We know you have a lot of fans! So what would you like to say to them?

Fans. Yet another word that I never thought would be associated with me. I am thankful for every single person who has taken a chance on a “newbie” indie author and purchased my work. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all the support. Truly, it means the world to me. To know that the stories that emerged from my brain entertain yours is the greatest gift of all.

What’s next for Ashley Fontainne?

I dare not venture a response. The last two plus years have brought about things I had never considered would even be a possibility in my life, so there is no telling what direction it will head now! All I know for sure is that the passion, the desire, the urge to write is burning bright. Until that internal candle is extinguished, I will follow the light.

The first time Darrion struck her, Lana loaded her wagon and left Cynegil. Two-year-olds should not hit like that. She draped the windows of her cottage with dense cloth and worked by a single candle. If she timed her flight well, she could pass through the market during changing of the guard. In another era, under another king’s reign, Lana would have rejoiced that Darrion had inherited his father’s gift. Now, if Lana did not present her son to the king, she could lose her head.
