Honoré de Balzac (May 20, 1799 – August 18, 1850) was a French novelist and playwright. His greatest work was a sequence of short stories and novels collectively entitled La Comédie Humaine. He is regarded as one of the founders of realism in European literature.  His writing influenced many subsequent novelists such as Charles Dickens, Edgar Allen Poe, William Faulkner, Jack Kerouac, and many others.
